Minecraft will be 15 years old next year, but the game remains extremely popular. Minecraft has sold more than 300 million copies. Just for reference, the second best selling game is Grand Theft Auto V, and that doesn’t even come close to Minecraft’s sales. GTA V sold only 185 million copies.

Studio Mojang announced this achievement during the Minecraft Live event, where they shared the new features that are coming to the game. One of the features will be the so-called “trial chamber”, in which waves of enemies and traps will come at you in rooms and corridors. New Star Wars: Path of the Jedi DLC and Planet Earth DLC are also in developmentwhich will be available on November 7 and early next year.

“Approaching its 15th anniversary, with over 300 million copies sold, Minecraft remains one of the best-selling games of all time,” said Helen Chiang, head of Mojang Studios. “(It’s) a milestone no one even dreamed of,” she added.

However, even after almost 15 years, it is still not clear when exactly the game was released. Minecraft developer Markus Persson, commonly known as Notch, first released Minecraft to the public in 2009, but the game was not officially released until late 2011. Persson used the game’s initial launch as an opportunity to get player feedback and improve it. In late 2010, Jens Bergesten took over as lead designer, and in November 2011, the official Minecraft game was released for iOS.
