The city of Zottegem calls on the Bouwdoos to turn the Penitentielaan in Velzeke into a bustling square during the summer holidays.
“With the ‘De Bouwdoos’ project, the Penintenlaan in Velzeke will be temporarily redesigned from 6 August to 9 September. After a successful inspiration evening and the preparations of many enthusiastic Velzek residents, the plan for this summer is ready. The Penintenlaan will look completely different for one month and there is a lot to experience this summer! All info on www.zottegem.be/bouwdoos”, said Alderman of Culture Lieselotte De Roover (CD&V).
“At the beginning of this year we started the De Bouwdoos project, a unique process in which we breathe new life into the square together with the Velzekenaar. The inspiration evening in February was a great success. About 30 enthusiasts gave many ideas and suggestions that the construction team set to work. The construction team is a group of committed residents, associations, schools, merchants and city services. The design for the temporary redesign is ready. There are many activities on the agenda. Anyone looking for a fun activity in a picturesque location from 6 August should definitely come to Velzeke.”
“The temporary redesign makes Penintenlaan a recreational meeting place for everyone, young and old. A varied plan was worked out with the contents of the kit, a well-filled container with seating, play and building elements. There will be water troughs, a play forest with climbing boxes and slide, picnic tables, herb troughs, an amphitheater with entrance gate, a barefoot path and much more. The full plan can be viewed at www.zottegem.be/bouwdoos† There are many fun activities on the calendar in which many associations and traders participate: Chiro Velzeke, Sint-Franciscus School, Free Primary School De Vlinder, Pentanqueclub, Neighborhood Committees, Ferm Velzeke, Youth Outreach Work Zottegem, Sheltered Living Flemish Ardennes, Gezinsbond Velzeke, Beugelhof, Via Promessa and Frapello Psychiatric Hospital. The commitment of all these enthusiasts is of great importance. Thanks to their collaboration, we are making this project a great success together.”
Make a note of some important dates in your diary. On Saturday, August 6, De Bouwdoos will be built together with local residents and our technical service. The activities will start on August 7. The opening party will take place on Saturday 13 August with a lot of entertainment: Youth Outreach Zottegem provides performances, Via Promessa organizes children’s yoga and bamboo and the Chiro provide the necessary refreshments at the bar. Everybody is welcome!” says Alderman De Roover. “After a bustling summer, we will also close festively on Friday 9 September. The activities are varied and attract young and old to Velzeke. Visitors discover the many walks, start to run, folk games, an open air cinema, children’s yoga, a picnic … The full activity calendar is available from the beginning of July on www.zottegem.be/bouwdoos.
“Based on the temporary plan, the many activities and a thorough evaluation, an analysis will then be made of the temporary redevelopment in order to arrive at a sustainable, permanent proposal. We also conduct this evaluation together with local residents, traders, schools and all associations. The Building Kit is already a perfect test set-up to gain insight into what the square will look like in the future. The Building Kit is a project of the intermunicipal association SOLVA, Logo Gezond+, Avansa Flemish Ardennes-Dender and the Regional Landscape Flemish Ardennes. This project is subsidized through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, Flanders and the Province of East Flanders. With this project, five village squares in the Flemish Ardennes will be given a temporary new meaning for one month. In 2021 De Bouwdoos developed in Kluisbergen and Sint-Lievens-Houtem, in 2022 it will be Zottegem and Geraardsbergen’s turn. More info on www.so-lva.be/bouwdoos.”
