In the Graaf van Egmontstraat on the edge of the Zottegem city center, work will start on Tuesday 5 July to renew the road surface. The road surfacing has been in a very bad condition for several years now and rather consists of an asphalt layer that has been patched up again and again on loose cobblestones that no longer form a good foundation base. The intention is to break up the old cobblestones and replace them with a sustainable foundation with a new road surface, also in asphalt. The works will be carried out by the private limited company Norré-Behaegel from Westende, which estimated the cost at EUR 71,217.26. The renovation of the road surface should be completed by Friday 15 July (depending on weather conditions).
TRAFFIC REGULATIONS
There will of course be no traffic in Graaf van Egmontstraat until the end of the works. It is foreseen that the street will be accessible during the weekly market on Tuesday 12 July. Our questions from a few days ago to aldermen of public works Cynthia Van den Steen (N-VA) whether this will also be the case tomorrow morning 5 July during the Tuesday market and whether special traffic regulations and/or diversions will be provided, remained until at the time of publishing this article unanswered. We were able to learn from another source that the one-way arrangement that applies in some surrounding streets will be maintained. Traffic coming from the roundabout near Egmont Castle must continue via Heldenlaan, Markt, Hoogstraat and Wolvenstraat to Molenkouter and beyond. Traffic coming from the Molenkouter can go through the Neerhofstraat or Kasteelstraat/A as normal. Scheirisstraat to Heldenlaan and beyond. The parking behind the Egmont Park will remain available (via Meersstraat).
