Due to the persistent drought in Elene’s Molenvijver, the city of Zottegem has decided to have the entire pond fished out. In the meantime, work is being done on a structural solution to de-silt the pond and an investigation of the sediment is planned for August.
“Due to the silting up of the pond, it dries out and the animals do not have enough water during dry periods. After advice from the Agency for Nature and Forests, it was decided to have the entire pond fished out.” said Alderman of the Environment Leen Goossens (CD&V)† “The advice recommends that, in view of the greatly increased risk of annual drought, no more stocking fish in ponds that may run dry. The fish is caught preventively in the pond and placed elsewhere, afterwards it will be ensured that no fish is released in it. “The fire brigade has already pumped water into the pond twice in very dry periods. By emptying the pond we avoid that this would be necessary again. In addition, together with the province of East Flanders, we are working on a more structural solution for the problem at the Molenvijver. An investigation of the sediment is planned by the Provincial Center for Environmental Research in August. After that, the water bottom packages will be measured by a surveyor so that it becomes clear how much sludge has to be removed from the pond. Once this has all been completed, it will be examined whether a tender file can be started.”
