The first edition of “Lierde Zingt” took place on the town square, between the shed and the town hall. This event was organized by the Lierdse culture council under the impulse of cultural official Lieve Henau and following the example of ‘Flanders sings’.
Despite the changeable weather and the fact that due to unforeseen circumstances the first announced starting hour had to be adjusted, a hundred and fifty singing enthusiasts still showed up.
Those present were put in the right mood by Rita Roelandt, who also afterwards led the harmony singing in the right direction. Song newspapers were distributed among those present in which the lyrics of the sing-alongs could be found. Both Dutch songs and French and English hit songs were discussed. The atmosphere was there immediately and while singing they even started spontaneously with a polonaise. It is a pity that all this was interrupted because during the harmony singing of Rita Roelandt and the Zottegemse Elvis an uninvited guest climbed the stage and in a daze of …, probably success also thundered. This unfortunate accident broke the atmosphere for a while, but the karaoke bar of DJ Kris Van Dries soon managed to get everyone back in the right mood.
It was surprising how many attendees dared to go for a solo performance after the congregational singing.
Some sang like a thrush or a nightingale, others sang like a cat or crow, and there was even a purebred howler monkey.
One of the most commendable performances was this by Alderman of Culture Katelijne Scheirlinckx, who certainly belonged to the first category with her beautiful voice. However, not only the ships, but every participant earned a big thumbs up for their performance.
Another compliment goes of course to the culture official, the members of the daily board of the Culture Council and the volunteers who made the entire event the success it was. We dare to say without hesitation that we are already looking forward to next year’s edition.
