Vollezelle. In a sprint with a group of ten riders, Arne Marit from Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise put the finishing touches on the proverbial i on Monday 25 July in the Raf Jonckheere Grand Prix in Westrozebeke. Luke Mudgway and Thomas Joseph were second and third respectively. Next season Arne Marit will ride for the WorldTour team Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert of sports director Hilaire Van Der Schueren.
From the first lap the peloton was beaten apart by a strong wind. Afterwards, the leading group was further decimated. In the end 15 riders were left, including Alex Colman and Jens Reynders. Jelle Wallays was also present. In the final the leading group was further thinned out. After a failure in the final lap of Jelle Wallays, Jens Reynders took off. The Limburger from Arne Marit’s team seemed to be heading for victory, but the chasing group was still able to catch the rider. Eight hundred meters before the finish, Reynders was overtaken.
In this way, 23-year-old Arne Marit was piloted towards the finish. On the finish line, the Vollezelenaar was able to finish the job. It has been a bad season for Marit with 7 falls in the spring. “This win is good for my confidence,” he said. In the coming weeks he can be seen in Leuven, Arctic Race, Schaal Sels and Geraardsbergen. Today he starts in the criterium of Roeselare. Next season he will defend the colors of the WorldTour team Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert of sports director Hilaire Van Der Schueren.
