The Bruisend Balegem Committee also kept to the tradition on the tenth edition: the start of Bruisend Balegem was once again served for the residents of Balegem. Vibrant Balegem for and by the Balegem herring eaters, one can be proud of this pet name. And of course the jenever also flowed freely, the ‘Balegemsen drop’, the honor and fame of the village.
After the high mass in honor of Our Lady, graced by the Parochial Singing Choir, the tenth edition was given the go-ahead for the tenth edition in the garden of the Residence De Krekelberg’, with speeches by Van de Velde, top roarer Christ Meuleman and mayor Johan Van Durme. from Bustling Balegem. It was a pleasure to enjoy the authentic Bruisende Balegemse forenoene. Opperbuiser Christ Meuleman and the bruisers again showed a lot of enthusiasm. They have a big heart for Bruisend Balegem. Lots of people at the typical Balegem Noene reception. The bruisers don’t let grass grow on it and the Balegemnaars were spoiled. A reception on his Balegems with jenever and herring. The Bruisend Balegem song sounded very festive. The song sings about the individuality of the village, the assets of “Boalegem”. With atmospheric music from ‘Joeng en Aat’ the tone was immediately set and the huge folk festival kicked off for good. The reception was offered by the Van Damme and Hof van Oranje distillery. A big thank you. A recipe for success. With the ‘Balegemsen’ and the BB song, a lot of atmosphere in the garden of Residence De Krekelberg. The inhabitants of Balegem once again lived up to their name of herring eaters and gin drinkers.
Gerard Vekeman lauded
Gerard Vekeman received a Live Time Achievement Award during Bruisend Balegem for his impressive career. A nice recognition for the troubadour, cabaret artist, painter, poet, sculptor,… say the creative centipede from Moortsele. In 1978 he broke through and became very well known in Flanders with his successful hit ‘Ikke met de Rikke’. Thousands and thousands of records were sold. He was allowed to perform his hit live on stage. Clearly, there is still no wear on the 88-year-old singer. For more than half a century he has distinguished himself in the cultural field and put his village Moortsele and by extension the merged municipality of Oosterzele on the map. For all these merits, he was awarded honorary citizenship by the municipality in 2021. (mvdv, photos ddl)
