In addition to the numerous fairground attractions, musical performances at various catering establishments and the traditional cycling race Egmont Cycling Race on Tuesday, the poster of the August fair in Zottegem also announces a fireworks spectacle every year on Monday evening.
Exceptionally, however, this extra attraction cannot take place (again) this time. Twelve years ago this was also the case when the weather gods were in such a bad mood on Monday August 16, 2010 that the fireworks literally and figuratively fell into the water. According to Mayor Evelien De Both, there are now two safety reasons for the forced cancellation. On the one hand, there are the renovation works on the Castle of Egmont and the accompanying wharf shed, which make it impossible to admit a large crowd into the Egmont Park without danger. On the other hand, this decision also follows the advice of the fire brigade, which advises against setting off fireworks now due to the persistent drought in recent weeks.
