Farmers with major damage due to extreme drought can ask the municipality of Zwalm to visit the estimation committee to estimate the crop damage.
The farmers can report the exact location of the affected plot in Zwalm, the cultivation and the planned harvesting date via [email protected]. The convened estimation committee will then make a determination and estimate the damage.
“Such an estimate helps the farmer with his declaration of damage to the Flemish Disaster Fund and/or in the context of the broad weather insurance that he has taken out,” says Alderman of Agriculture Francia Neirinck (voorZwalm/Groen).
“Together with the experts, the environmental officer and myself, we will then visit the various affected plots to determine the situation and measure the damage. Another appeal to our farmers: submit your report as soon as possible, as the Disaster Fund advises farmers to report the damage within 60 days and this together with some photos to prove the damage”.
However, a notification is not yet a guarantee that compensation will be paid. “This summer’s drought has yet to be recognized as a disaster, but we prefer to err on the side of caution and try to help our farmers as much as possible by anticipating so that no burden of proof is lost. We also write to the farmers personally,” continues the alderman.
