Recently, activity has resumed within the construction site around the town hall on the Zottegemse Market. After the outer facade of it two years ago replastered in repainted Since the beginning of March of this year, the building has been under construction again – pending a thorough restoration – for the further implementation of interim renovation works. This time certain roof sections to be tackled, in particular: renewing the cladding of the gutters and drains, replacing zinc with copper and renewing lead flashings and connections in various places. These works were assigned to the bvba Timmer-en Roofing Peter D’Hoker from Leeuwergem at the cost of 61.058,25 euro. In addition, workers from Pigment – this Zottegem company also carried out the facade (painting) work two years ago – would also clamber onto the scaffolding again to paint the renewed cornices, anchor the consoles and repair the joints of the dormer window (cost of this approx. 43,400 euros).
It was originally planned to have the renovation of the roof itself carried out at a later stage. This provoked a lot of critical remarks about the ‘achronologicalsequence of renovation works (normally roof first, then walls/facades). Until it was reportedly determined after the scaffolding had been erected that, compared to an inspection in 2020, the condition of the slate roof may have deteriorated significantly as a result of the severe storms of this spring. That is why it was decided to renovate the entire roof itself. Due to the urgency and the technical coherence with the other works to be carried out, a price offer was also requested (and subsequently approved) from the company Timmer- en Roofing Peter D’Hoker who calculated the cost of installing a new natural slate roof and repairing the dormer window at EUR 189,686.76. Like the city for the other renovation works on the city hall can count on a so-called heritage premium from the Flemish Government, the Onroerend Erfgoed Agency was also awarded for this roofing work applied for an additional grant. This premium would amount to 97,578.36 euros.
