The Deftingenaar Enzo Van den Kerckhove is therefore again very satisfied with the course of his action. The largest flower was registered in Geraardsbergen and measured 440 cm. The photo contest linked to the action was won by WZC Kartuizershof in Lierde.
In the month of May, sunflower seeds were again distributed in the Lierde region. The aim of this is to see as many sunflowers as possible in the streets during the summer holidays and to make the region the sunniest place in Flanders again. “Mission accomplished” responds initiator Enzo Van den Kerckhove enthusiastically.
“This year there was again a huge interest in my sunflower project, and this makes me a very happy man. In total 51 people took part in the competition and together we planted almost 400 sunflowers. Unfortunately less than last year, but the drought undoubtedly plays a part in that. I also saw clearly more sunflowers in the streets than in previous years, which makes me think that the project is catching on. It’s a shame that not more people took part in the competition, because there were great prizes to be won. For example, various Lierdse self-employed sponsored more than €220 worth of vouchers.”
The main prize for the largest sunflower was won by Herman D’Hondt from Geraardsbergen. Its mastodon of a flower measured 440 cm. The photo contest, on the other hand, was won by the very enthusiastic residential care center Kartuizerhof from Lierde. In addition, two random participants were also surprised with prizes. All this by the generous Lierde self-employed: Flowers and plants Faignaert, Flowers Hedera, De Cock butcher shop, Bakery De Lekkerbek as well Café ‘t Karrewiel.
The project also came on the radar of none other than Minister of State, Mr Herman De Croo. He felt that this initiative increased togetherness and therefore decided to support the project by sponsoring €50. Five WinkeLierde vouchers were purchased with this to be distributed among the winners. In this way, not only are the winners honored, but the local Lierdese entrepreneurs are also supported.
Enzo is very proud of this: “I did not foresee that someone like Herman De Croo decided to support my project, so this means a lot to me. With all the support and support I get for this, I am even more ambitious than ever. I can’t wait for the next edition. Finally, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this project. My parents and family, friends, the participants and of course the self-employed. See you next year for the third and hopefully sunniest edition.”
