On 8 and 9 October 2022, the municipality of Lierde will celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Carthusian Church in Sint-Martens-Lierde.
During this commemoration, life as it was at the time of the Carthusians and the history of chapel to a parish church will be looked back on.
Three hundred years ago, on July 23, 1722, the foundation stone of the Carthusian Church in Sint-Martens-Lierde was laid. and since October 10, 1785, it served as a parish church. On 8 and 9 October 2022, this event will be commemorated by the municipality of Lierde.
On Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 5.30 pm unveiling of the restored memorial stone and the accompanying information board. At 6 pm there is a Gregorian Eucharist, sung by Carthusian monks. Afterwards there is a short reception with Carthusian beer on the square in front of tavern De Kartuizer.
On Sunday 9 October 2022 will give the ghost of Prior Bruno van Damme guided tours highlighting the way of life of the Carthusians. The guided tours take place before the third (10 am), the noon (12 pm), the vespers (3 pm) or the Compline (8 pm). The reconstruction of a Carthusian cell, the living space of the monks, is also visited during the tour. In between the various guided tours, the church remains open and everyone can enjoy the film ‘Into Great Silence’ by Philip Gröning in peace. This film takes you to the unknown world in the Grand Chartreuse, the home of the legendary Carthusian Order in the French Alps. The church will be additionally decorated with the 14 stations of the neo-Gothic stations of the cross that hung in the church until the second half of the last century. On October 9, 2022, appropriate carillon music will also be played throughout the day with various concerts performed by Jan Verheyen on the mobile carillon of ‘Bells Lab’ from Pelt. These can be listened to at 14h, 14h45, 16h, 16h45 and 17h30.
The church and the Carthusian cell will until October 23, 2022 can be visited daily between 10 am and 6 pm. The film ‘Into Great Silence’ will be screened continuously and the Stations of the Cross in the church will also remain on display during that period.
