Following the fifth edition of the Week of the Sustainable Municipality, an initiative of the Association of Flemish Cities and Municipalities (VVSG) that draws attention to the 17 sustainable development goals, Herzele paid tribute to its Sustainable Heroes.
This year’s focus is on sustainable heroes who contribute to an important core principle of the 2030 Agenda: LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND. This principle represents the commitment of all UN member states to eradicate poverty, end discrimination and exclusion, and ensure that even the most vulnerable groups in our society can benefit from social, economic and environmental sustainable progress.
“It is a broad theme that broaches all areas of society. That is why in Herzele we have chosen to nominate Sustainable Heroes who in any way ensure that no one is left behind, that there is inclusion and equality.” according to Heidi Knop, Alderman for Sustainable Development Cooperation.
No fewer than eight Herzeelse Sustainable Heroes were honored on Thursday evening 22 September in the presence of friends, relatives and sympathizers, good for about 80 people. These are the volunteers of the Digital Info Point, OKAN teacher Sharon De Kerpel, Telephone operator Eliane Vereeken, Mandy Matthys from Zonder Hunger Naar Bed in Herzele and four sports clubs that offer G-Sport: Judoclub Herzele, KVC De Toekomst Borsbeke, Move-It Dance Club and Fencing Club Excalibur.
“One by one, they each in their own way ensure that no one is left behind in Herzele. For example, the volunteers of the Digital Info Point contribute to digital inclusion, while Eliane Vereeken uses the phone to fight loneliness. Mandy Matthys fights poverty with her Facebook page ‘Without Hunger in Herzele’ and OKAN teacher Sharon De Kerpel ensures that non-native speakers quickly feel welcome in the classroom. In addition, the four Herzeel sports clubs ensure that, thanks to their G-sport range, young people and adults with disabilities are part of the club and can participate in sports. Local board Herzele is extremely grateful to these residents and sports clubs for their unconditional commitment. Thanks to them, everyone in our municipality gets an equal chance!”
