With the presentation of Marc de Bel’s new book ‘Stiene van de Geitenhoek’, a new, additional exhibition is also opening in the Velzeke Archeocentrum: ‘Roman Coin Treasures’. In this way one can see with one’s own eyes part of the famous ‘treasure of Arras’ about which the book is about and delve into the fabulous world of coin treasures. Saturday afternoon September 24th Marc De Bel comes to sign his book in Archeocentrum Velzeke.
“This new, additional set-up in the Archeocentrum Velzeke illustrates how we seamlessly combine public relations and archaeology. We are also extremely proud and grateful to host both a fabulous coin treasure and a top author. It proves that the stories and history here, sometimes literally, are there for the taking.” says Deputy An Vervliet, responsible for Heritage
Roman coin treasure of Arras star of the novel and of a new arrangement in the Archeocentrum
The story of the discovery of the treasure of Arras, now a hundred years ago, is indeed exceptional. Seasonal workers from Kruishoutem find one of the most important Roman gold treasures ever in a brickyard in northern France. Everyone immediately wants their piece of the pie. The Kruishoutemnars take coins home with them. They are hidden, given away, exchanged, lost, sold, … all over the world. They still show up at Sotheby’s auctions today. Some medallions and coins fetch astronomical amounts. All elements of an exciting story are present and Marc de Bel weaves a romantic storyline through it in his well-known, masterly way. Thanks to his successful young-adult novels, the children who grew up with his children’s literature can still enjoy his writing. Part of the Arras treasure is in the collections of the Royal Penning Cabinet in Brussels. This has never been shown to the public before! The Province was able to get a loan and from now on everyone can come and look at 19 beautiful gold coins in the Archeocentrum Velzeke.
Even more treasures and stories
The Archeocentrum Velzeke is of course not ready for its test piece in this area. After all, its own collection also contains some magnificent Roman coin treasures, among others found in Velzeke itself. They can be situated in the light of the unrest in the third century AD. Another special story is the discovery of the treasure of Grotenberge: someone simply finds in his vegetable garden, above the ground, a metal clog weighing more than 10 kg. Turns out to be more than 2,300 Roman silver coins glued together! Come and discover it all at the themed exhibition in Velzeke until December 18!
