The Wettersesteenweg or N42 is an important arterial road through Oosterzele. The Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) has ready the plans for the redevelopment of the road between Zottegem and Wetteren, after a thorough study, consultation rounds and adjustments. Anyone who wants to know what the future traffic situation will be is welcome on October 26 at the information market in the community center (GC) De Kluize, Sportstraat 3, between 5 and 9 pm.
Traffic jam and accidents
The N42 is mainly known for traffic jams and often dramatic accidents. The Wettersesteenweg is not only the connecting road between Zottegem and Wetteren, but also the access road to the E40. The busy traffic and the non-separated cycle path also make the N42 life-threatening for cyclists.
After much study and participation from residents, the municipality and companies, AWV comes up with concrete plans for the renewal of the N42. The focus is on three objectives: smooth traffic, safe cycling and attention to the environment. In addition to an additional lane in both directions, there will be a new carpool parking, safe cycling infrastructure, crossings for animals, a bunker for bats and additional greenery. If everything goes smoothly, the works will start in 2024.
N42 as a total picture
The paved road between Wetteren and Oosterzele does not stand alone. The Agency therefore emphasizes that when developing this project, it takes into account the needs north of the E40 complex on the one hand and the plans in Sint-Lievens-Esse on the other. For example, in the Environmental Impact Study that is currently being completed, the mutual effects of the projects in Wetteren, Oosterzele and Sint-Lievens-Esse are taken into account.
