According to our sources, the leak along the Gaverbosdreef has been closed. The works were carried out this night. Now the tube is flushed and filled. After that, samples are taken and after examination the pipeline is put into use again.
The cause of the leak was rusted through bolts on a manifold at a drain pit. The manifold has since been replaced.
The reason for the postponement of the repair was not that a pump was broken in MERELBEKE. Here is a pumping station with three pumps running in turn BUT there had been a power outage and none of the pumps were working.
The disruption may therefore continue for a while. The water pipe can be fully put into use again after the lab has confirmed the quality of the water.
It is difficult to determine how long the leak had been going on. What is certain is that millions of liters of drinking water have been lost. A little calculation tells us – suppose the leak was active for 15 days, then the cost of water is
2.27 per cubic x 200 cubic per hour x 24h x 15 days = 163,440 € which is a considerable amount. The tube through which the water flows has a diameter of 1 meter.
