The past week in GBS De Vlindertuin in Herzele, see link, was one with the magic of math close by. In the kindergarten there was a ‘big math week’ and the primary students enjoyed a ‘math day’.
“The toddlers started this week in the theme ‘building’. But then with the full focus on the learning area ‘Mathematics’”, explains director Els De Durpel of GBS De Vlindertuin. “In this way, what seems more like a musical activity turned out to be a mathematician. A song about high and low towers? This is how mathematical concepts are taught. Or stamping with blocks is measuring, do they all fit on my sheet? etc. Mathematics is high on the agenda in primary education: hard work is being done to further improve mathematical results. But the kids don’t always like the job. The Great Mathematics Week just lets them experience that this can indeed be the case and that mathematics is interwoven in everything. So also in musical or linguistic activities and even in the movement lessons with teacher Nele. Which gives her a different view of this brainy profession, and that motivates!”
