In collaboration with the municipality of Lierde, the Hemelverdegem Festivities Committee organized a memorial service and flower tribute to the victims of both world wars. The commemoration mass was held in the Sint Jan Baptistkerk in Hemelvedegem. After the worship service, the ceremony followed at the memorial plaque of the victims of the First World War on the church wall where the chairwoman of the Festivities Committee Nina De Smet laid a flower arrangement. Followed by a ceremony at the monument to the victims of the Second World War under the majestic oak tree on Sint Jansplein. After a short speech and calling of the names of the fallen for the Fatherland by René Henau, representative of the former combatants, a flower wreath was laid there by ships Erna Antoine. After playing the Lastpost and our National Hymn, there was a minute of modest silence.
After the mass and the flower tribute, those present were treated to coffee, refreshments and drinks by the Festivities Committee in café Sint Jan at Rita’s house.
The municipality in turn offered a reception at 11 am in the town hall for the patriotic associations and sympathizers of the various Lierdse boroughs. However, it is regrettable to note that fewer and fewer people are taking part in these ceremonies.
After this more “official” part, those who registered for this gathered in the Sint Janszaal in Hemelvedegem to participate in the winter banquet, arranged by the Festivities Committee. After an aperitif with delicious snacks, we could feast on a delicious pig on a spit with “chips in the skin” and vegetables, topped with a mustard sauce. As icing on the cake, you could still enjoy a dessert buffet with cake, mini pastries, chocolate mousse, tiramisu and a scoop of ice cream.
To end the day, there was the traditional Manila game, for which 13 tables showed up to play cards. In addition to the card enjoyment, those present were also offered sandwiches with head, cheese or minced meat.
For the second time in a row, the largely renewed and especially rejuvenated board team of the Hemelverdegem Party Committee proved that they know what to do and can bring any activity to a successful conclusion.
