The results of a number of exploratory soil investigations are now known, on the basis of which it is recommended to maintain or adjust the already announced precautionary measures (no-regret measures).
In June 2021, the Flemish Government decided to map all locations with an increased risk of PFAS contamination. In the context of this inventory, an exploratory soil investigation specifically aimed at PFAS was also carried out in Ninove at a number of PFAS suspected sites:
sites of the former Jacobs site, Mallaarstraat 11 sites of l’Atelier du pain, Pamelstraat-East 430 training area of the fire brigade at the Ninove recycling center, Pamelstraat-Oost training area of the fire brigade at the end of Fabriekstraatthe fire station, Désiré De Bodtkaai 3 (not yet investigated) areas La Lorraine, Elisabethlaan 143 (La Lorraine has carried out an exploratory soil investigation on its own initiative).
In April of this year, the city already announced precautionary measures for these 6 sites for the use of soil and groundwater within a radius of 100 meters from these zones. Affected residents have been notified.
The first results of the exploratory soil investigation are known for 3 locations: Mallaardstraat 11 (former Jacobs site), Pamelstraat-Oost 430 (l’Atelier du pain) and La Lorraine. The measurement results show that there is a clear indication of serious contamination with PFAS in the groundwater. For these locations, further research must reveal the seriousness of the contamination and/or whether or not remediation must be carried out.
For those living near Mallaardstraat 11 and Pamelstraat-Oost 430, the Agency for Care and Health recommends extending the precautionary measures for the use of groundwater to a perimeter of 500 meters around the zones concerned. These measures mean that the groundwater may not be used as drinking water or for making tea, coffee or ice cubes. It should also not be used to water the vegetable garden or fill the swimming pool. The groundwater may be used to wash the car, flush the toilet, hose down the driveway or water plants. The precautions for using the bottom are lifted.
The Agency for Care and Health advises residents of La Lorraine to maintain the existing precautions for the use of soil and groundwater within a radius of 100 meters.
All parties involved will soon receive a letter from the Agency.
Mayor Tania De Jonge: “Based on the results of the investigation, we made an analysis together with the environmental expert. I am very pleased that the gardens of a number of affected residents can be released. We will continue to monitor this and hope to have the results of the soil-descriptive research soon.”
No results are yet known for the other 3 locations (Fabriekstraat, Désiré De Bodtkaai and Pamelstraat-Oost) and the precautionary measures already announced for the use of soil and groundwater within a radius of 100 meters from these sites apply.
Precautions for each site can be found on the city’s website. From November 24, all adapted precautions per site can also be read on the PFAS map of the Flemish government.
