The municipality of Herzele is looking for a new use for the kiosk on the village square in Sint-Lievens-Esse. There are already some avenues that are being considered, but residents are being asked to provide input. LEADER is subsidizing 52,000 euros of the total planned cost of 80,000 euros.
“The neighborhood has been asking about it for a while and admittedly: the kiosk on the village square needs to be renovated”, says Alderman of Culture and Tourism Hiedi Knop (Open VLD). “The demand from residents for attention to maintenance was linked to the idea of tackling innovation in a future-oriented way. That’s how the project became ‘living next to the brewery’ born. A title that can be taken very literally. It refers to the ‘life in the brewery’ that this project can bring. Although there is a small quip in that expression by changing the word ‘in’ to ‘next to’. A reference to Brouwerij Van Den Bossche, which is also effectively located on the village square. In addition, the brewery was central to all village festivals on the square because their storage areas near the kiosk on the square were used to set up a temporary bar. The need to renew the kiosk is now being seized upon to get to work with a number of residents. The local Herzele administration wants to engage in active dialogue with a core group and think about what a village square as a public place can mean for today and the future. Not only the kiosk, which was built in 1907 on the occasion of the Livinus celebrations, but also the space around it will be examined.”
“There is no such thing as a soulless renovation. For the renovation of the kiosk, we are looking for its meaning for the inhabitants and visitors of the village. The future interpretation or furnishing is therefore still open. A group to add to citizens and association representatives (including Die Bronne, ‘t Essenhofje, KermEsse, De Lezende Paling and Kunst en Broedermin) contribute ideas about the future use of the kiosk and how this translates into its renewal. We ourselves see different and diverse possibilities. It can go to a historical reconstruction of the kiosk according to the original design. Or a completely different track, investigating whether this kiosk, with respect for the original design, can be transformed into a place with a contemporary interpretation. Instead of a podium, it can then be a place to meet or sit. But very important in the full story is that this choice is made by a group of residents.”
