China’s army announced on Monday that it was “ready for battle” at the end of military exercises carried out around Taiwan in response to the visit made to the United States by the Taiwanese president, Tsai Ing-Wen, but, amid tensions, an American destroyer close to a Chinese island.

“The troops deployed in the operational area are ready for permanent combat to decisively crush any form of Taiwan independence and attempts at external interference,” the Chinese military announced at the end of the military exercises, according to The Associated Press.
China has carried out large-scale new air and naval exercises around Taiwan in response to the meeting that Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen had in the United States with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy.
“China wants to use any diplomatic interaction between the US and Taiwan as a pretext for military training,” noted Kuo Yu-Jen, director of the Taiwan Policy Research Institute and an expert in defense studies.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense announced that in the past three days, 12 Chinese warships and 91 military aircraft have conducted maneuvers around Taiwan. “We will not relax our efforts at all” to increase combat capabilities, announced the Administration in Taipei, specifying that it is monitoring the Chinese ballistic forces and the movements of the Shandong aircraft carrier.
Amid tensions, the US Navy announced, according to Reuters, the dispatch of the destroyer USS Milius to carry out “normal operations” regarding freedom of navigation near a Chinese artificial island in the South China Sea.
