The European Union expressed concerns on Monday about Chinese military exercises around Taiwan, warning that changing the island’s status through the use of force would have enormous global implications.
“We are concerned about the intensification of military activities” by the Chinese military in the Taiwan Strait and around Taiwan, “by making incursions into the Taiwanese Air Identification Zone and by crossing the median line,” said a spokesperson for the European Commission, Nabila Massrali. according to the Reuters agency.
“Taiwan’s status should not be changed unilaterally or by force. Any kind of instability in the Taiwan Strait as a result of the escalation of the crisis, accidentally or through the use of force, would have enormous economic and security implications regionally and globally,” the quoted official stressed.
“It is essential that an attitude of restraint be applied. Tensions must be overcome through consistent and open dialogue. The European Union and the member states will continue to support efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region,” Nabila Massrali emphasized.
China has carried out large-scale new air and naval exercises around Taiwan in response to the meeting that Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen had in the United States with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy. Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense announced that in the past three days, 12 Chinese warships and 91 military aircraft have conducted maneuvers around Taiwan.
