The mysterious symbols are located in a desert on the north-east coast of Qatar. It is about Al Jassasiya, the largest and most important cave art site in the Asian country. The symbols have the shape of a ship that can only be seen from a great height, according to CNN.
In total, archaeologists have discovered about 900 stone carvings at Al Jassasiya. Petroglyphs are mostly enigmatic signs arranged in various patterns, but also representations of ships with sails.
„Although cave art is common in the Arabian Peninsula, some of the carvings at Al Jassasiya are unique and cannot be found anywhere else. These sculptures represent a high degree of creativity and observation skills on the part of the artists who created them. It also required abstract thinking because they couldn’t see them from above“, Ferhan Sakal, representative of the Museums of Qatar, told CNN.
There are approximately 12 petroglyph sites in Qatar, located mainly along the country’s coasts. Al Jassasiya, about an hour north of the Qatari capital, was discovered in 1957. Researchers have several theories, with an ancient game court, a computing system, a warehouse or a site dedicated to the gods being among the debated options .
The age of the petroglyphs is also a mystery. Some say they are from the Neolithic, others believe they were made hundreds of years ago.
