The Northern Irish police announced, on Tuesday, the detection of four suspected improvised explosive devices in a cemetery in Londonderry, as part of a security operation carried out before the visit of the US president, Joseph Biden.
“The discovery of these devices represents a sinister and worrying new development,” said police inspector Bobby Singleton, quoted by Reuters.
The explosive devices were detected a few hours before the arrival of President Biden in Belfast, a city located about 100 kilometers from Londonderry.
On Monday, several individuals attacked police officers in Londonderry during an unauthorized march against the 1998 Peace Agreement that ended the conflict between British unionists and Irish nationalists.
The US President, Joseph Biden, will travel to the Northern Irish city of Belfast, and later to Dublin, the capital of Ireland. The purpose of the visit is to highlight the “enormous progress made since the signing of the Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement 25 years ago”, the White House said.
