In the context of the dramatic pollution in Bucharest and the worrisome cutting of forests around the Capital, dozens of non-governmental organizations, civic groups and public persons gathered under the umbrella of the “Together for the Green Belt” platform, request the authorities to protect the forests in Ilfov County and to start the steps for the creation of the Bucharest-Ilfov Green Belt.
The draft law proposed by the civic platform “Together for the Green Belt” involves the protection of the entire forest vegetation of Ilfov and constitutes the foundation stone for the future Bucharest-Ilfov Green Belt. It was drawn up together with MPs Diana Buzoianu and Oana Cambera and was submitted to Parliament today, April 12.
The Bucharest-Ilfov Green Belt represents a project that if we don’t treat now with maximum priority and seriousness, the future will impose it on us anyway at a heavy health, economic, ecological and ethical cost.
The Bucharest-Ilfov Green Belt needs committed supporters to make it a reality. And this requires the “opening of the eyes” of all relevant decision-makers, current or potential, regardless of the party they belong to, and their deep understanding of the fact that they must join hands to achieve this objective.
Through an online petition, the civic platform “Together for the Green Belt” asks politicians and authorities:
I. The high patronage of the President of Romania, His Excellency, Klaus Iohannis for the civic platform “Together for the Green Belt”.
II. Adoption and promulgation of the draft law for the protection of the forests of Ilfov.
III. An integrated plan of Bucharest City Hall and Ilfov County Council to combat pollution, a plan that would also include the Bucharest-Ilfov Green Belt.
IV. Inclusion of the green belt in the Bucharest-Ilfov Regional Development Plan 2021-2027. Abundance. Generosity. Altruism
V. An assumed calendar for the implementation of the Bucharest-Ilfov Green Belt.
VI. The inclusion of the topic related to air pollution in Bucharest in the CSAT-Supreme Council of National Defense agenda.
The initiators of the platform are Alex Găvan, high-altitude climber and conservationist, and Florin Stoican, president of the Kogayon and Văcăreşti Natural Park associations.
“Exceptional circumstances, such as the one we are in now, demand exceptional actions and measures, demand exceptional vision and exceptional daring. And exceptional ethics. And all this can only be done animated by an exceptional love”, says Găvan.
“Periurban forests have an essential role in ensuring the quality of life of the inhabitants of big cities. They are the green lungs of the most polluted areas inhabited by people, they oxygenate the air and filter pollutants, ensure the connection of the townspeople to nature, offer multiple possibilities for recreation, leisure and education, protect inhabited areas, ensure a pleasant microclimate and conserve biodiversity. For all these and many others, these forests must be protected and used for their predominantly social and environmental role and must be expanded in such a way that the townspeople benefit from these benefits to the maximum”, adds Stoican.
