Los Blancos were comfortably in the lead for the vast majority of the match and could easily have scored more than two goals. Karim Benzema opened the scoring in the first half and Marco Asensio made it 2-0 after the break after Ben Chilwell was shown a straight red in the 59th minute for a foul on Rodrygo.
Chelsea focused on the counter-attack from the start and Joao Felix broke through offensively to find himself one-on-one after just 90 seconds, but he was tracked down by Eder Militao and couldn’t beat Thibaut Courtois.
The blue-and-whites were also solid in defense, but in the 20th minute Dani Carvajal played for Vinicius Junior, with a lob behind the English defense, and his shot, rejected with the palm of his hand, reached Benzema, who completed it simply.
Then, in 10 men, Chelsea lasted only until the 74th minute, when after a quick corner the ball reached Asensio, who shot first-time from the edge of the box, for 2-0.
The second leg will be played next Tuesday on Stanford Bridge, in London.
