“It is a fatally wrong decision. The German government is breaking a new red line set by itself,” said Dietmar Bartsch, the leader of the Left Party (Die Linke) parliamentary group in the Bundestag, the lower house of the German Parliament.
Dietmar Bartsch recalled that, in January, Chancellor Olaf Scholz ruled out the possibility of authorizing the transfer of fighter jets to Ukraine. “The German government is playing a game of confusion with the Parliament and the public”, accused Dietmar Bartsch.
The government in Berlin approved, on Thursday, a request from Poland to deliver five MIG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, the Berlin Ministry of Defense announced, quoted by Die Zeit publication. Poland needed German approval as it received these planes from the stocks of the former German Democratic Republic. “I welcome the fact that the German Government has taken this decision, which proves that the world can rely on Germany,” said German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
