The novelty is only part of the beta update for Android, but it is possible that it will also be extended to iOS, at the global launch.
Companion Mode was noticed by the specialized website WabetaInfo, which published some screenshots where it explains how another phone can be attached to the main one.
As in the case of the “connected devices” function, with which you can access WhatsApp from a computer, without being disconnected from your smartphone, there is a QR code generated by the application for the second device.
Once the attachment is complete, you will see the content syncing on both phones or tablets, which will happen automatically every time you open the app.
At this time, the second device can only be an Android phone (or tablet), as Companion Mode is not yet available on WhatsApp for iOS. However, those with an iPhone can already connect a second Android phone, as the feature is enabled on Android. The limit of devices that can be associated to a single account is four, without distinguishing between smartphone or tablet, WabetaInfo shows.
Messages and calls remain encrypted with end-to-end technology even when using WhatsApp from a connected mobile phone: every time someone sends a text or content, it is sent to all paired devices, keeping the encryption intact.
