An unknown collection of 230 classic cars owned by a private collector in the Netherlands will go on the market next month, including a Lancia Aurelia Spider and a Mercedes-Benz 300S Roadster.

The cars were owned by a Dordrecht businessman named Mr. Palmen, who began collecting them 40 years ago, housing them in two separate buildings and a church. Palmen was no longer able to keep his collection due to personal circumstances, and Gallery Aaldering recently became the owner of what is said to be one of the largest car collections in the world.
Temporary owner Nico Aaldering told the Telegraaf that the collection is unique because Palmen did not focus on one brand or type. “He’s a big car enthusiast and he knew a lot about them, but he bought what he liked,” Aaldering said.
Very few people knew about the existence of the huge collection until last year. “Mr. Palmen lived like a hermit and didn’t let anyone into his life,” Aaldering said.
Even his close neighbors did not know that so many cars were stored next door. “One of them told me that he asked several times to take a look inside, but was always refused,” Aaldering said
The presence of the cars appeared for the first time last year, when a fire broke out in one of the warehouses, and the firefighters managed to stop the cars from being engulfed in smoke.
The new owners will not be able to drive the vehicles, because they are covered in dust and soot and need service. But they are in their original state, Aaldering said. “Mr. Palmen never drove them … and I saw no sign of them being restored.”
