The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, on Thursday, the sanctioning of Congressman Michael McCaul, the chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives in the United States, after his visit to Taiwan, informs the Reuters agency.
Republican Congressman Michael McCaul visited Taiwan last week and met with President Tsai Ing-Wen. The chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives signaled support for the training of the Taiwanese military and the acceleration of arms deliveries.
Michael McCaul’s visit to Taiwan “affected China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, sending a serious wrong signal to pro-independence separatist forces”, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.
Beijing ordered the sanctioning of the American congressman by banning travel to China, blocking any assets on Chinese territory and stopping interactions with Chinese organizations or individuals.
