In 2019, Italy became the first major industrialized nation to sign on to this initiative, a multinational project aimed at expanding China’s commercial footprint.
However, so far not much has been achieved from this pact, which was signed during a state visit to Italy by Chinese President Xi Jinping and is due to be renewed in 2024.
Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, said last year, before she was elected, that she did not want to favor Chinese expansion in Italy or Europe.
“The geopolitical context and what I have perceived leads me to an even more cautious approach than in the past,” said Giancarlo Giorgetti, quoted by the Italian news agency ANSA, on the sidelines of a meeting of the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC, according to Reuters.
A final evaluation of the initiative will be given by Meloni, he said.
