A passenger bus carrying dozens of members of a music band skidded off a highway and plunged into a ravine in western India on Saturday, killing 13 people and injuring 29 others, police said.
The bus was heading to Mumbai, India’s financial capital, in Maharashtra state from the city of Pune, where the musicians were performing, said Atul Zende, a police officer. The exact cause of the accident is not yet known.
Zende said most of the passengers who died were part of a music band from Mumbai, according to CBS News.
He specified that the rescuers removed the seriously injured from the wreckage of the bus and sent them to the hospital.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his “sadness” over the accident and announced financial aid for the families of the victims.
Fatal road accidents are common in India due to reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and outdated vehicles. According to the police, more than 110,000 people die every year in road accidents in India.
