Musk, the owner of Twitter, is assembling a team of artificial intelligence researchers and engineers, according to the FT report, and is also in talks with some investors in SpaceX and Tesla to finance his new company.
Musk’s plan for the firm comes weeks after a group of AI researchers and executives, including himself, called for a six-month pause in development of systems more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4 , citing potential risks for society, reports Reuters.
Musk has obtained thousands of graphics processing units, systems that power the computing needed for intensive tasks such as AI and high-end graphics, from Nvidia Corp, according to the FT. Shares in the chipmaker, which declined to comment on the matter, rose Friday on the news.
The billionaire last month registered a company called X.AI Corp, registered in Nevada, according to a state filing. The firm lists Musk as sole director and Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk’s family office, as secretary.
Elon Musk is one of the co-founders of OpenAI, which was started as a non-profit organization in 2015. He retired from the company’s board in 2018.
