The former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday that he will not run for the presidential elections in 2024. The ally and devoted defender of Donald Trump chose to give up a competition that would have put him in competition with his former supreme commander, writes The Guardian.
After saying he was considering a run in January, the former Trump administration official and CIA director released a statement regarding the decision. “For those whom this announcement disappoints, I apologize,” he said, calling it a personal choice.
“And for those of you who are moved by this, know that I am 59 years old. There are many other opportunities for which the time may be more appropriate as presidential leadership becomes even more necessary.”
Pompeo, who also spoke about his decision on Fox News, would be the second former Trump cabinet member to enter the race to challenge the former president for the 2024 Republican nomination, joining the former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who announced her campaign in February.
Former Vice President Mike Pence is also considering entering the race and has stepped up his travel and outreach to early voting states in the primaries and caucuses.
While Haley and Pence have openly expressed their differences with Trump, Pompeo has not publicly parted ways with the former president or been reprimanded by him, as many of his potential rivals have. Pompeo recently referred to Trump as a “great boss.”
Pompeo – a witty and sometimes harsh politician – easily won four consecutive terms in the US House of Representatives, representing the southern state of Kansas. He served on the House Intelligence Committee as well as the select committee that investigated the deadly 2012 attack on the US mission in Benghazi, Libya.
