A fire has engulfed an apartment building in an old neighborhood of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, killing at least 16 people and injuring nine others, authorities said on Sunday.

The state newspaper The National quoted a press release from the Dubai Civil Protection for the balance of victims.
The fire broke out Saturday in Dubai’s Al Ras neighborhood, a tight maze of streets and alleys that is home to one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, The Associated Press reports.
Al Ras is also home to the Dubai Spice Market, a major tourist attraction near Dubai Creek.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but there are indications that there may be trouble in the five-story apartment building.
The Civil Defense “stressed the importance that owners and occupants of residential and commercial buildings fully comply with safety and security requirements and guidelines to avoid accidents and protect people’s lives.”
