“Trump should be fighting Democrats, not lying about Governor DeSantis,” the ad said. “What happened to Donald Trump?”.
Former President Trump launched his candidacy for the 2024 Republican nomination in November, and polls show him leading the list of declared and not-yet-declared candidates. DeSantis, who is expected to launch a run, is in second place in the polls.
Never Back Down Down, the Super PAC supporting DeSantis, ran the ad titled “Fight Democrats, Not Republicans” online and on “Fox News Sunday.”
The ad begins with a reference to Trump’s legal problems in New York.
“Donald Trump was attacked by a Democratic prosecutor in New York. Then why is he spending millions of euros to attack the Republican governor of Florida?”.
Trump pleaded not guilty in Manhattan on April 4 to 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels. He was questioned in a separate $250 million business fraud lawsuit filed by the state attorney general.
Make American Great Again, the main Trump-aligned Super PAC, has already attacked DeSantis in ads.
His latest statement on Friday referenced a Daily Beast report that DeSantis ate chocolate pudding with his fingers while on a flight from Tallahassee to Washington in 2019.
“DeSantis has his fingers dirty all over seniors’ rights, like cutting Medicare, cutting Social Security, even raising the retirement age,” the ad said. “Tell Ron DeSantis to keep his pudding fingers out of our money.”
A Reuters/Ipsos poll from early April showed that 48 percent of Republicans said they want Trump to be their party’s presidential nominee in 2024, and 19 percent support DeSantis.
