EU High Representative Josep Borrell’s comments in a remote address at the start of the Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers’ meeting in Japan highlighted two of the themes that have been brought to the fore ahead of the meeting. for three days: the need for a unified approach to China and concerns about Taiwan.
“Whatever happens in the Taiwan Strait will mean a lot to us“, said Borrell, stressing the need to keep the channels of communication with China open, writes the Reuters agency.
He described China as “partner, competitor and systemic rival” and said that the relationship towards which the EU will lean “will be determined by China’s behavior“.
China is in the center of attention at the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting. The group’s only Asian member, Japan, is increasingly concerned about the growing power of its neighbor China in the region and is particularly focused on the possibility of military action against Taiwan.
