Morgan Freeman said that terms referring to the black race used formally and academically should be removed from the vocabulary. The actor considers himself a “proud black”, as does Denzel Washington.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, the actor revealed that he objected to terms like “African American History Month” and “Afro-American”.
Calling both “insults”, Freeman said of the former: “Are you going to downgrade my history to a month?”
Freeman said he objected to “African-American” because it was inaccurate.
“I am not subscribed to this title. Black people have had different titles up until the N word (nigger or nigga) and I don’t know how these things get so good, but everyone uses “African American”.
What does it actually mean? Most black people in this part of the world (North America) are mestizo. And you say Africa as if it were a country when it is a continent, like Europe. Black history is American history; are completely intertwined”said the actor quoted by The Guardian.
Asked by The Times if he agreed with Denzel Washington’s statement that he “very proud to be black, but black is not all I am.”
Freeman said: “Yes exactly. I agree. You can’t define me like that.”
