The invitation, sent through the letter of the Secretary General of the OECD, Mathias Cormann to the Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă, represents the recognition of the efforts made by Romania, and in particular by the Ministry of Justice, to join this effort, at the same time constituting a solid commitment of our country in the direction of the development and implementation of effective policies in the matter of the anti-corruption fight, the Government transmits.
For more than three decades, the Anti-Bribery Task Force has acted as a global driving force promoting the fight against corruption of foreign public officials in international economic operations. By participating in this Working Group, Romania will be able to take part in the development and implementation of effective policies and practices in the fight against corruption, including by increasing awareness among economic operators regarding the risks and consequences of bribery.
The OECD Anti-Bribery Convention is one of the most important multilateral anti-corruption instruments. Joining the Convention will contribute, on the one hand, to the consolidation of anti-corruption policies and practices, and, on the other hand, to increasing the country’s visibility by promoting Romania’s own experience in this field.
“Romania’s accession to the Anti-Bribery Convention will increase the reputation of Romanian companies, contributing to the inclusion of these companies in global supply chains, facilitating the winning of public procurement contracts abroad. The consolidation of the trust that Romania enjoys at the international level will materialize , thus, also by attracting new responsible foreign investors, as the accession to the Convention sends a very strong signal at the international level in relation to Romania’s compliance with anti-corruption standards and good practices. The Government will continue the process at a sustained pace of joining the OECD, the most powerful global economic organization, which brings together states from which 90 percent of foreign direct investments come,” said Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă.
The invitation confirms the organization’s confidence in Romania’s ability to contribute to joint efforts to promote the organization’s values in order to ensure prosperity and equality for all citizens.
“This invitation represents the recognition of Romania’s efforts in recent years to improve the fight against corruption and, implicitly, to strengthen the judicial system. At the same time, the invitation of the OECD Council represents a clear signal that Romania has the potential to support the effort to combat corruption of foreign civil servants in international economic operations. The executive will contribute to the completion of the process of accession to the Convention as soon as possible, for the start of the monitoring by the Working Group of the way in which Romania implements its provisions, an important milestone in the process of accession to the OECD”, adds the quoted source.
