British Typhoon jets intercepted a pair of Russian fighter jets and a spy plane flying over the Baltic Sea, close to NATO airspace.
Russian fighter and spy planes intercepted near NATO airspace
As part of a joint mission with the German Air Force, British pilots from the RAF intercepted the three Russian aircraft over the Gulf of Finland.
The RAF announced that one of the aircraft had been identified as a Russian intelligence plane flying from mainland Russia to the Kaliningrad enclave, located near Poland.
He was met by two Russian fighter jets based in Kaliningrad, which flew him south through Estonian airspace.
RAF and German Typhoon aircraft escorted the aircraft around the area before handing it over to the Swedish Air Force.
“We often see Russian military aircraft flying over the Baltic Sea, so this was a routine interception for us. However, the importance of intercepting these aircraft and our commitment to the collective defense of NATO airspace remains steadfast and resolute,” said an RAF representative.
The British and German air forces are collaborating in Operation Azotize to protect the eastern flank of NATO’s border.
