The arrival in Brazil of the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, sparked protests from supporters of Ukraine.
They gathered in public places and demonstrated carrying placards with messages against Russia and the war in Ukraine.
Lavrov talked on Monday, in Brasilia, with his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira and is to meet with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Late last week, Lula called for a group of countries not involved in the war to broker a peace deal, in a move that unsettled Washington.
“The United States must stop encouraging war and start talking about peace,” Lula said in statements broadcast on state television.
