A four-story parking garage collapsed near Pace University and the New York Stock Exchange, killing at least one worker and injuring five others who were inside the structure.
The exact cause is to be investigated, however, certain structural problems could have caused the catastrophe.
“We have no reason to believe this was anything other than a structural collapse,” Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell told reporters.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, four others were taken to area hospitals for their injuries and a sixth person who was injured refused medical treatment, said New York Fire Department Chief John Esposito.
Pace University, a private university campus whose students, faculty and staff use the parking structure, was evacuated as a precaution, according to authorities.
“This building is completely unstable,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
New York City Department of Buildings online records showed the structure at the site of the collapse had been cited for 45 violations, including 25 since 2003, many related to its elevators.
However, a file from 2003 notes that “there are cracks in the ceiling slab” as well as “defects with cracks in the concrete”. Only an $800 penalty was paid by administrators for the violation, and the building has been left with unfixed problems ever since.
