“21 people died, unfortunately,” CCTV said.
In addition, 71 patients of the hospital were evacuated.
The fire, reported around 1:00 p.m. local time (1:00 a.m. Romanian time), was extinguished and the sick were evacuated.
The fire is one of Beijing’s deadliest in recent years, surpassing the toll of a 2017 fire that killed 19 people in a cramped two-story building in Daxing District, a southern suburb of the capital.
That tragedy prompted authorities to demolish a large portion of buildings deemed illegal or unsafe in the neighborhood and forced thousands of migrant workers to leave their homes and businesses, CNN notes.
