The Italian Sports Guarantee Commission organized a hearing on Wednesday, and a decision is expected on Thursday, reports Reuters.
Juventus, Italy’s most headline-grabbing soccer club, appealed a ruling by Italy’s soccer court in January following an investigation into how the club and a number of other teams handled deals with player transfers.
As part of the January ruling, which left Juventus out of the qualification places for European competitions, the tribunal also imposed bans from holding positions in Italian football for 11 former and current club directors.
The general prosecutor for sports, Ugo Taucer, said during Wednesday’s hearing that prosecutors and the court acted correctly, but added that the points penalty should be reevaluated in a new ruling.
Juventus’ lawyer, Maurizio Bellacosa, said that the January sentence was “full of mistakes” and that it should be annulled.
The new legal developments could cause the cancellation of points deduction in Serie A, which would propel Juventus into the top four teams.
In testimony before the Collegio di Garanzia, the general prosecutor for sports, Ugo Taucer, said that the punishment imposed on the Turin club for alleged financial irregularities and false accounting “has a lack of clarity in the motivation that must be appreciated and evaluated by a new judgment”.
“The penalty in points for the team has a deficiency that must be evaluated through a new decision of the federal court,” he also said.
This could lead to a new trial and, pending a final decision, the annulment of Juventus’ 15-point Serie A penalty. As of Thursday, this cancellation would move the club into third place, ahead of Roma.
