The United States has stepped up military activities in Sweden, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Wednesday, expressing hope that Turkey and Hungary will complete ratification procedures so that the Swedish nation can be admitted to NATO by July.
The US military has stepped up naval and air missions in Sweden “to show our deep support”, said Lloyd Austin, according to the daily Le Monde, during a visit to Stockholm.
“We are in a hurry to get Sweden into NATO soon. And, to be clear, we are in a hurry to get this done before the summit in July. We therefore encourage Turkey and Hungary to ratify Sweden’s admission as soon as possible,” insisted Lloyd Austin.
The Washington administration has repeatedly urged Turkey and Hungary to allow Sweden to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
Turkey and Hungary postpone the procedures for the ratification of Sweden’s admission to NATO. Turkey is dissatisfied with Sweden’s tolerance towards members of some Kurdish separatist groups, and Budapest criticizes the Swedish Government’s positions regarding the political situation in Hungary.
