Specialists claim that the waste has gathered on the Galați bank of the Danube following the floods that have occurred in recent weeks upstream on the river and its tributaries. Numerous plastic cans, textile materials and plant debris formed an island around the pontoon on which the ferry crossing point is accessed.
“Year after year, when the Danube rises, we face this situation. We resolve. I made an order at Ecosal. They have a grapple with a longer arm and we try to get everything out of the water, load them into a truck and hand them over to the sanitation company. Unfortunately, in Galaţi, no state institution has a specialized vessel that can intervene on the water in such situations”, said Cosmin Chelbaşu, the representative of the company Navrom Bac Galaţi.
The plant remains, some of them large, affect the traffic of the ferries that connect the city of Galati with the county of Tulcea.
“It is dangerous for the traffic of ferries. Vegetable waste, tree trunks, can penetrate between the decks of the barges, stop in the propellers. I really had a situation. They are in the water and cannot be seen, they cannot be bypassed, then they can be attached to the propellers. We hope to solve the problem as soon as possible”, said Cosmin Chelbaşu.
The Environmental Guard noted the situation and requested the urgent cleaning of the Danube.
