“Ukraine’s accession to NATO would represent a serious and significant danger for our country, for the security of our country,” said Dmitri Peskov, the spokesman of the Russian Presidency, quoted by CNN.
Dmitri Peskov reiterated that one of Russia’s central goals is to stop Ukraine from joining NATO.
The future of Ukraine is in the North Atlantic Alliance, General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday, during his visit to Kiev, stressing that the “main objective” of NATO is the victory of Ukrainian forces against Russia. “Ukraine’s future is in the Euro-Atlantic family, Ukraine’s future is in NATO. At the same time, the main objective of the Alliance, of the allies, is to ensure that Ukraine wins,” said Jens Stoltenberg in Kiev, according to Le Monde daily.
Standing next to Stoltenberg, President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that “it’s time” for NATO to extend an invitation to join Ukraine. Also, Zelenskiy insisted on “overcoming partners’ reluctance regarding the delivery of long-range weapons, modern military aircraft, artillery systems and armored vehicles”.
Stoltenberg specified that the subject of Ukraine’s eventual admission to NATO and the issue of security guarantees will be on the agenda of the summit scheduled for July in Lithuania.
Russia is vehemently opposed to the eventual admission of Ukraine to the North Atlantic Alliance, and this is one of the reasons invoked by the Moscow Administration for the Russian military invasion. Moscow constantly condemns the statements of some Western leaders regarding the intentions to impose a “strategic defeat” on Russia.
