The authorities in Ukraine reported, on Wednesday evening, the observation of the collapse near Kiev of some alleged fragments of a satellite of the Aeronautical and Space Agency of the USA (NASA).
Anti-aircraft sirens were activated on Wednesday evening in the area of the capital of Ukraine. “The bright light of an aerial object was observed in the sky, in the area of Kyiv. According to preliminary information, this phenomenon was the result of the fall of a NASA satellite. In order to avoid the production of victims by falling fragments, the aerial alarm was activated. The anti-aircraft system it was not used,” said Serhii Popko, the head of the Military Administration in the Kyiv region, quoted by the CNN television station and the Le Monde newspaper.
The US National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) had previously announced that the RHESSI satellite, launched in 2002 to examine solar energy rays and decommissioned in 2018, was to enter the Earth’s atmosphere during the night from Wednesday to Thursday, in the area of Europe. NASA warned that some metal fragments of the satellite weighing about 300 kilograms could reach the ground.
NASA has not yet confirmed whether fragments of the RHESSI satellite fell in Ukraine.
