“Recently, there has been an absurd rhetoric whereby China is accused of changing the status, disrupting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. This logic is absurd, and the conclusion is dangerous,” said Qin Gang, in a speech delivered at Shanghai Lanting Forum.
“Right-thinking people can see who is involved in hegemonic acts of intimidation (…). Not mainland China, but separatist forces who want Taiwan’s independence and a few countries are trying to affect the current status. Those who play with fire will burn themselves at a given moment”, drew the attention of the Chinese Foreign Minister.
China has carried out large-scale air and naval exercises around Taiwan in response to the meeting that Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen had in the United States with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy. Beijing believes that Taiwan’s president’s trip to the US has undermined the “one China” political principle. The United States maintains a position of “political ambiguity” on the issue of Taiwan, not recognizing the independence of the Chinese territory, but offering support to the separatist administration in Taipei.
The Beijing administration has repeatedly highlighted its ambition to succeed in reunification with Taiwan and has not ruled out the use of military force. Joseph Wu, Taipei’s foreign minister, warned Thursday that he fears the Chinese military could launch an invasion in 2027. “We take the Chinese military threat very seriously. I think 2027 is the year we have to take seriously,” said Joseph Wu in an interview with LBC.
A few days ago, Annalena Baerbock, Germany’s foreign minister, accused China of trying to change the rules-based international order, arguing that the European Union should not passively assist Beijing’s pressure on some Asian states. “Many of our partners in Asia already feel how China is trying to replace the rules-based international order with its own rules. China claims that there are no rules, although it has ratified international treaties. The Europeans should not hide in a shell,” he said Baerbock. “A Chinese military operation in Taiwan would be a horror scenario, which would generate shock waves” on the economies of China and Germany. “We are following the tensions in the Taiwan Strait with great concern,” Baerbock stressed. In response, Beijing accused Western states of supporting Taiwan’s separatist aspirations.
On the other hand, the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, recently stated, during a state visit to China, that the European Union must not strictly follow Washington’s or Beijing’s policies on the issue of Taiwan. “The worst thing would be for us, the Europeans, to become imitators, to adapt to the American pace or China’s exaggerated reactions,” Macron said.
