“At this moment, there is no decision regarding any accession of Ukraine to NATO,” said a spokesman for the German Government on Friday, quoted by the Tagesschau.de website. The official from Berlin stated that the discussions regarding the possibility of Ukraine’s eventual admission to NATO continue among the member states.
Earlier, the German Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius, said that there is no question of a discussion at this moment about the possibility of Ukraine’s admission to the North Atlantic Alliance. “The door is ajar, but now is not the time for a decision,” said Pistorius, quoted by Der Spiegel.
Jens Stoltenberg claimed that all NATO member states would agree on the eventual integration of Ukraine into NATO. The Secretary General of NATO made these statements during his visit to Kiev on Thursday and reiterated them on Friday, during the meeting of the Contact Group for the defense of Ukraine, held at the American military base Ramstein, in Germany.
“Ukraine’s future is in the Euro-Atlantic family, Ukraine’s future is in NATO. All allies agree on this. At the same time, the main objective of the Alliance, of the allies, is to ensure that Ukraine wins,” Stoltenberg said on Thursday, with on the occasion of the meeting he had in Kiev with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who insisted that “it is time” for NATO to extend an invitation to join Ukraine.
Asked by journalists on Friday to provide clarifications about the prospects of Ukraine’s accession to NATO, Jens Stoltenberg reiterated the position, although he admitted that it is not known how the conflict will evolve. “All NATO allies agreed that Ukraine will become a member. President Zelensky has clear expectations, we discussed the issue of accession and security guarantees, of course Ukraine needs security. Of course, no one can know when it ends or how this war will end, but we know that when this war ends, we have to make sure that it doesn’t happen again, that Russia can’t continue to attack, that it won’t launch another war against Ukraine, and that it won’t disrupt European security again. So we need discussions on the security framework, we need a discussion on membership, but my message was that first of all, Ukraine has its proper role in NATO, the allies agreed, but the focus is now on making sure Ukraine wins,” Stoltenberg insisted, according to Sky News.
